For all its hard won success, by the beginning of the last decade of the twentieth century, feminism was troubled. Though younger, less visible, and less institutionalized, the lesbian and gay rights movement also had made some great advances over the previous few decades, yet it, too, was fraught. There was the serious, but more obvious problem that many women and gay men and lesbians—persons of color, for example, as well as bisexuals and transgendered people—felt, and justifiably so, marginalized within the very movements that were supposed to free them from the margins. But then there was another issue, one that was perhaps even more profound: Who are these people— women, lesbians, gays—for whom these groups are purportedly fighting? More to the point, what does it really mean to claim to represent women or lesbians or gays? And, furthermore, does this claim itself help to produce and perpetuate the very groups that those libratory movements claim only to represent? In the late 1980s and throughout the 1990s, queer theory began asking such challenging questions and providing answers that were equally challenging, and even more threatening. This paper deals in particular with queer theory's critiques of identity politics— which necessitate consideration of identity and power—as well as an alternative means of subverting identity, identity politics, and power that many of these theorists suggest: parody. 1 Drawing on the feminist credo that " the personal is political, " queer theory extends the notion of what constitutes the political and considers, too, which practices
